Biography / CV of Donald FoxleyI took up sculpture in 1992, and it became so important to me that in 1994 I left my career in civil aviation engineering in order to concentrate on it full time. I attended a range of courses and took every opportunity to increase my understanding of sculpture and my range of sculptural techniques. I started off in adult education classes, and progressed to the Open College of the Arts sculpture 1 and 2 courses and an advanced sculpture workshop at a further education college.
I learnt an enormous amount from a variety of tutors and decided that I wanted to pass on what I had learned and add my own understanding to it. I therefore took the City and Guilds 730 adult teaching course, and developed a Creative Sculpture course, which I am now teaching.
Artist Statement of Donald FoxleyMy early works were small pieces, mainly in clay. Even then, I recognised that some of them has an architectural quality that really required a larger scale and an appropriate outdoor setting. I therefore started to work larger, employing new materials suitable to the size. In 1997 I made "Naissance" a 12 feet high piece, which was purchased by the Royal Horticultural Society, and is now on permanent display at the RHS Gardens, Wisley.
I not make works in a wide range of sizes, dependent on the design and intended setting. I have just completed "Significant For". 15 feet high, which was also on display at Wisley. I was a finalist in a competition for a memorial sculpture on Boston, Lincolnshire, and I have works in a number of private collections.
